Nowadays, most compressor impellers are made of aluminum. Their endurance strength allows circumferential speeds of about 520 m/s and thus pressure ratios of about 4.5. In exhaust gas turbochargers for slow-speed engines, pressure ratios of more than 5 are obtained through the use of titanium impellers, which allow even higher circumferential speeds. If the objective is to achieve even higher pressure ratios, and with them engine mean effective pressure values of — or even higher than — 30 bar, at least for continuous operation, multi-stage supercharging becomes necessary.
