Zusammenfassung

Um die Bedeutung und die Funktionen des Spielens beim Menschen zu verstehen, ist es hilfreich, das Spielen im größeren Kontext der Evolution zu betrachten.
Spielen verbraucht Energie und birgt Gefahren. Die Existenz des Spielverhaltens ist daher auf den ersten Blick nicht mit dem evolutionären Konzept der Selektion und Mutation vereinbar. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auf dieses Darwin’sche Paradoxon bezüglich des Spieles eingegangen.
Es wird nach einer Beschreibung des Spielverhaltens bei exemplarischen Tierarten die aktuelle Studienlage bezüglich seines evolutionären Nutzens behandelt
Die Tierstudien zeigen, dass das Spielen die sozialen und kognitiven Fähigkeiten verbessert. Zudem verhindert Spielen psychiatrische Entgleisungen. Es wurden außerdem Hinweise darauf gefunden, dass Spielen die Kreativität verbessert.
Ausgiebiges Spielen in der Kindheit scheint somit aufgrund dieser Verbesserungen die spätere Überlebens- und Reproduktionsrate zu erhöhen
Die Tierstudien lassen mögliche Rückschlüsse auf die Funktionen zu, die Spiele im Allgemeinen und Computerspiele im Speziellen bei Menschen haben.

Die Gefahr, durch Spielen zu verunglücken, gibt es nicht nur im Tierreich, sondern auch beim Menschen: Viele haben schon einmal durch einen Skateboardsturz, eine Blutgrätsche beim Fußball oder eine Entgleisung auf der Rutsche einen unfreiwilligen Krankenhausaufenthalt gehabt. Eine bleibende Narbe oder ein künstlicher Schneidezahn schmückt so manchen Sportler als Souvenir und erhöht bestimmt nicht immer die Paarungschancen. Manche brachten sich sogar durch spielerischen Leichtsinn in ernste Lebensgefahr, sei es beim Schwimmen im Atlantik, durch Parcours an Hauswänden oder beim Ultimate Fighting. Dies ist auch statistisch belegbar. So gingen laut Statististischem Bundesamt im Jahre 2015 zumindest 16,48 % aller Unfallopfer im Alter zwischen 5 und 15 Jahren in Deutschland auf Sport- und Spielunfälle zurück (Statistisches Bundesamt 2016).

Es soll an dieser Stelle darauf hingewiesen werden, dass meines Erachtens der Mensch kein Recht hat, grausame Versuche an höheren Tieren durchzuführen, die aufgrund ihrer Gehirnstruktur mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit ebenso Leid empfinden können wie wir. Es gibt deduktive statt empirische Möglichkeiten der Erkenntnis. Diese sollten bevorzugt werden, auch auf die Gefahr hin, dass sich die Antworten für die Wissenschaft verzögern. Da die obigen und alle im Folgenden genannten Versuche allerdings schon durchgeführt wurden, wäre es töricht, die interessanten Ergebnisse nicht zu verwerten.
