Abstract

‘Vernacular democracy’ is emerging in contemporary India with increasing participation of more diverse population in public activities. This new deepening of democracy is upheld by the affirmation of diversity based on the ethico-spiritual value of ontological equality.

The “Great Words” are words that evince the highest principle of identifying Brahman with Atman in the Upanishad (sacred Hindu treatises). These are conventionally identified as the following four: “Consciousness is Brahman,” “This Atman (the true Self) is Brahman,” “I am Brahman,” and “Thou art That”.

Jean-Luc Nancy says, ‘The democratic rule, the power of the people, is the power first to defeat the order and then, for all and everyone, to take charge of the infinite opening thus brought to light. To take charge of this opening means to make possible the finite inscription of the infinite. This fundamental choice—it must be repeated, it is the choice of an entire civilization—results in the inevitable annulment of the general equivalence, which is the indefinite perpetuated instead of the inscribed infinite, which is indifference instead of affirmative difference, tolerance instead of confrontation, grey instead of colors’ (Nancy 2008: 57–58).
