The increasing demand for improved fuel economy and a reduction in emissions are driving the development in downsized combustion engine designs. In particular, new approaches to fuel spray have been developed to allow for advanced mixture preparation concepts. To allow these engines to work effectively and to also contribute to reduced emissions, gasoline fuels are increasingly mixed with Ethanol and other Biofuel substitutes and so fuel composition research plays an increasing role in the design of the engine.
