Zusammenfassung

Infolge von Suburbanisierungs- und ökonomischen Restrukturierungsprozessen haben sich die globalen Städte Nordamerikas – New York City, Los Angeles und Chicago – im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts zu Stadtregionen ausgedehnt, deren Einzugsgebiete existierende Gerichtsbarkeiten und politische Zuständigkeiten sprengen. Dieser Beitrag befasst sich historisch einordnend mit der Frage, inwiefern globale Stadtregionen und deren gesellschaftliche Akteure eine eigenständige Politik und eigene politische Institutionen entwickelt haben, um diesen neuen Realitäten adäquat zu begegnen. Mit Blick auf die drängendsten ökologischen und sozialen Probleme ist dies bislang nur sehr eingeschränkt der Fall.
