Abstract

This paper examines the eccentricity fault in inverter fed three-phase induction motor (IM) using finite element method (FEM). Induction machines are the most mature technology among various commutator less machines. Electrical-, mechanical-, and environmental-related faults usually occur in IM. Mechanical faults are of bearing and eccentricity faults. Eccentricity results in non-uniform air gap that exists between the stator and rotor. It has to be diagnosed immediately otherwise it results in stator and rotor rub, leads to motor damage. Finite element analysis (FEA) provides great flexibility in designing the induction machine with exact geometric shape, property of material used and also considering non-linear behavior of the drive by taking magnetic saturation into account. Electromagnetic parameters such as voltage, speed, torque, flux density, flux distribution are analyzed for faulty motor by comparing with healthy motor using time-stepping FEA.
