Abstract

A This chapter investigates street naming as a facet of urban governance in Southeast Asia. It opens with an introduction to toponymic inscription and its role in promoting good urban governance. The chapter presents case studies from various ASEAN cities, including Singapore, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, and Ho Chi Minh City, illustrating diverse approaches to street naming. It examines the main institutional actors involved, procedures for naming and renaming streets, and the historical and post-colonial contexts influencing these practices. The discussion highlights how street naming reflects broader governance issues and identities. The chapter concludes with lessons learned and reflections on the implications for urban governance in the region.
