StringWeaver: Research on a Framework with an Alterable Physical Interface for Generative Art

Abstract

In order to improve the input interface for generative art, the author was inspired by a traditional game called string figure to design a framework with an alterable physical input interface named StringWeaver. The input system of StringWeaver is consisted of strings (made of black conductive rubber tube) which can be customized physically by rearranging and blob tracking system that can track audience finger. The visual output is directly projected on the input interface with music and sound generated. StringWeaver was proved to be useful by three prototypes developed under the framework of it. Limitations and future work are introduced at the end of the paper.

The analog input pins have the AnalogRead function which means voltage between 0 and 5 volts can be read and a integer values between 0 and 1023 is returned. Arduino Uno only has 6 analog input pins which are not enough. To make it easier, the method to expand analog input pins is introduced later.

There is a limitation that all the strings must be connected end to end in this scheme, due to the technological reasons.

In this case, the detailed algorithm of median filter is: record 5 coherent values from analog input pin, wipe off the maximum value together with the minimum and average the rest.

In our testing situation, the internal resistance is about 1 KΩ which can be found from the datasheet of 74HC595 NXP.
