According to the Alpine Convention for the protection and sustainable development of the Alpine region, about 13 million people in eight countries in more than 6,200 municipalities are currently living in the European Alps (CIPRA, 2007). About 90 % of the Alpine surface is covered by Austria, Italy, France and Switzerland. Slovenia holds 5.8 % of the surface, Germany 3.5 %, Monaco and Liechtenstein 1 % each.
