In clouds, the liquid and solid phases of water are highly dispersed, with a large surface-to-volume ratio. As might be expected, this necessitates going beyond the bulk phase descriptions of the previous chapter, even for the most rudimentary understanding of the formation and growth of cloud particles. Therefore, in this chapter we shall consider briefly the essential distinctive surface properties of ice and water, and explore some of their more immediate consequences.
