Surveying involves measuring the location of features on the Earth’s surface, typically for the purpose of making a map. It also includes the computation or measurement of distances, height differences and bearings. There are several specialized forms of surveying, like profiling the bed of a lake or locating positions by astronomy, but in this chapter we shall be concerned only with terrestrial surveying.
