Abstract
Technology has increased due to the fast growth of the population, because of human demand. Man is in a kind of examination with his environment and world. At this point, the concept of sustainability needs to be understood. It is desirable to understand sustainability and its effects in aviation with this book. In this chapter, basic concepts about sustainability are described.

Chapter 2. Energy Management at the Airports
Abstract
The number of airports has recently increased due to the fast growth of the aviation industry and the increment in the number of new destinations added to the flight network. The dynamic structure, 24-hour servicing, performing flight operations safely, and the provision of comfortable conditions for passengers in terminal buildings, has led to an increase in the energy consumption of airports. Energy management has become an important topic for the continuous improvement of energy performance in airports as they are sites with high and intense energy consumption. In this chapter, an energy management model is proposed for airports considering sustainable development principles. The proposed energy audit models are applicable to an international airport terminal building.

Chapter 3. Risk Methodology to Assess and Control Aircraft Noise Impact in Vicinity of the Airports
Abstract
Analytical modelling of system safety and risk methodology is used to describe the relationships between the causes, dangers and effects of aircraft noise impact in various scenarios of aviation system development. Risk is assessed according to the hazard identification, associated with the probability of adverse events and their consequences, but the main emphasize is done on noise annoyance. The approach uses two types of risk in principle: individual and societal. A number of events must occur if a main stressor should take place with conditional probability of their realization. Dose-response function is applied to estimate the damage in an exposed receptor, and mathematically it gives a relationship between the intensity of the stressor and the effects in the exposed receptor. Framework for risk assessment and reduction concerning the control of a number of annoyed people by noise is proposed also. Hazard, vulnerability and coping capacity are interpreted in accordance with new requirements of the standard ISO 31000:2018.

Chapter 4. Biodiversity Management
Abstract
Biodiversity is generally defined as the variety of life on Earth. Therefore, biodiversity is the main of living resources, which are indispensable for providing the basic vital needs of people. In general, biodiversity is evaluated in three hierarchical categories: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity. Human factor plays a role directly or indirectly at the beginning of the factors that negatively affect biodiversity in the Earth. Regardless of the origin of the causes that loss of the biodiversity, conservation, and sustainable management of biodiversity are the common responsibility of people. For this reason, biodiversity management has an important place in aviation as in every field. In this chapter, firstly, biodiversity, the reasons of biodiversity loss, and biodiversity conservation are discussed. Then, biodiversity management and methods are described in four stages: definition of the problem, planning, monitoring of biodiversity, and evaluation. Assessments on the applicability of these methods in aviation are also discussed in this section. Finally, the importance of sustainable management of biodiversity at airports is evaluated.

Chapter 5. A Holistic View of Sustainable Aviation
Abstract
This chapter redefines the concept of sustainable aviation (SA) in a holistic model that encompasses the landside and the airside of aviation. It also covers the type of the aviation fuel, ground transport, safe utilization of renewable energy resources near airports, waste management, biogas, new HVAC technologies, aviation and passenger safety, energy, and exergy economy, all being mapped on a new circular exergy diagram. This chapter gives special emphasis to terminal buildings and presents a new exergy-based rating system. Three international airports were compared in terms of CO2 emissions, sustainability, and rational utilization of energy and exergy.

Chapter 6. A Short Brief on the Aircraft History and Anatomy
Abstract
The history of aviation and aircraft anatomy are the main topics that should be known in the understanding of aviation-related studies. In this section, firstly the history of aviation from the beginning to the present will be briefly explained. While explaining history, it is generally tried to be explained based on people and events. Finally, future technologies and hot topics are mentioned. In the other section, the basic components that describe the aircraft are explained. Aircraft components are grouped as main systems and small parts forming them. These parts are explained in a simple way as their functions and structural features, respectively.

Chapter 7. Technology Review of Sustainable Aircraft Design
Abstract
Since the beginning of the aviation industry, fossil fuel is being used as the only source of fuel to power airplanes. Each year the popularity of aviation industry among the passengers is increasing dramatically because of its short journey time. Therefore, the demand of fossil fuel is also increasing to support the additional need. However, the stock of fossil fuel is reducing and will all be consumed within a couple of decades. In addition to this, the increment of greenhouse gas has become another issue, which should be dealt with urgently in order to not contribute to global warming. Because of these upcoming problems, another source of fuel and a significant development in aircraft design are a must for the future of aviation industry. Some new sources of fuels are being tested as alternative fuels. Solar power, biofuels, and hydrogen fuel are some of them. New techniques for aircraft design have also been developed within the last couple of years. To make these new ideas available, all the aircraft manufacturing companies and engineers should work collectively.
