In this concise, well-written book, Catherine Dupré takes a pioneering approach to constitutionalism in Europe through a focus on the concept of human dignity. She does so through an analysis of legal systems, constitutional documents, and in court cases from the UK, Germany, France, and Hungary, as well as through European Union (EU) documents such as the Lisbon Treaty and cases heard before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The volume is important, as is Dupré’s development of the concept of dignity, although the reader ultimately concludes that the legal framework for the importance of dignity is less developed than philosophical claims. …
