During the Second World War, two major technological advances occurred that were to have a revolutionary impact on aviation weather: the development of radar use in weather detection and, simultaneously, the development of a greatly expanded use of aircraft. The use of weather radar in aviation was to prove revolutionary over the next 40 years by providing previously unavailable resolution regarding the nature of storms, events that in the early days of aviation took a high toll in lives.
