In the following section we present a short description of the main features of the climate of the marine surface layer over the North Atlantic Ocean, as visible in the maps and diagrams contained in this volume. A more general description, including the upper air circulation and the climatology of synoptic systems, has recently been given by Tucker and Barry (1984). Instead of describing details of the monthly fields chart by chart, we will give a more schematic and introductory overwiew. In this way we can avoid quoting all the numbers on the charts and diagrams and giving detailed explanations for all observed patterns.
