This paper describes the observation of surface radiation balance over the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau from August 1982 to July 1983. The expedition was carried out by Lanzhou Institute of Plateau Atmospheric Physics, Academia Sinica. There were four field sites over the Plateau. Through the analysis and calculation of the observational data, it is shown that on the Plateau, the annual total of global radiation is larger than that on the plains; the surface albedo is large in winter and small in summer; the annual total of effective radiation is similar to that of the tropical desert; in winter, the surface heating field acts as a heat sink in the central and northern part of the Plateau, and in other seasons it acts as a heat source for the whole Plateau; and the solar ultraviolet radiation is very strong. In addition, the paper also briefly reviews the studies on solar radiation and heat budget over the Plateau in China in the past several decades.
