Über dieses Buch

This book presents the second volume of Piola’s original Italian text together with the English-language translation and comments, showing convincingly that Gabrio Piola’s work must still be regarded as a modern theory. Gabrio Piola’s work has had an enormous impact on the development of applied mathematics and continuum mechanics. As such, a committee of scientific experts took it upon themselves to translate his complete works. In a second step, they commented on Piola’s work and compared it to modern theories in mechanics in order to stress Piola’s impact on modern science and prove and confirm that he achieved significant milestones in applied mathematics.

Introductory remarks about the Volume II of the Complete Works of Gabrio Piola
Abstract
In this Volume II of the translations into English of the works by Gabrio Piola, we begin from the true first work written by the young Gabrio before 1824, when he was less than 30 years old. The content of the work Sull’applicazione de’ principj della meccanica analitica del Lagrange ai principali problemi. Memoria di Gabrio Piola presentata al concorso del premio e coronata dall’I.R. Istituto di Scienze, ecc. nella solennità del giorno 4 ottobre 1824, Milano, Imp. Regia stamperia, 1825, submitted to respond to a research program proposed by the I.R. Istituto on 4th October 1822, is in some aspects very modern and astonishingly topical.

On the Applications of Principles of Analytical Mechanics by Lagrange to the Principal Problems
Abstract
In this chapter it is presented the translation of the opera “Sull’applicazione de’ principj della Meccanica Analitica del Lagrange ai principali problemi” by Gabrio Piola. It was presented for the contest for the prize and crowned by the I.R. Istituto di Scienze the 4th of October 1824.

Reflections on the Units and on the Measures of the Various Physical Quantities
Abstract
In this chapter it is presented the translation of the opera “Riflessioni sulle unità di misura e altre quantità concrete” by Gabrio Piola. It is an unpublished manuscript and it is a courtesy of Politecnico di Milano, Archivi Storici - Area Servizi Bibliotecari di Ateneo, where the original manuscript is conserved into the “fondo Gabrio Piola”.

Hamilton Principle in Piola’s work published in 1825
Abstract
In this paper we assess how a version of Hamilton Principle is formulated by Piola in his Memoir composed between 1822 and 1824 and published in 1825. The Italian title being Sull’applicazione de’ principj della Meccanica Analitica del Lagrange ai principali problemi, in this volume its English translation was chosen to be: On the application of the principles of Analytical Mechanics by Lagrange to the main problems. After a detailed discussion, we observe that also in this case the Stigler’s Law of Eponymy is verified: Hamilton Principle was not formulated at first by Hamilton. Also, some conclusions about the epic vision of science (that is the belief that science is developed by solitary heroes) are drawn and the due tribute to the great contributions by Lagrange, Piola and Hamilton is paid. In particular one of the first appearances of matrix notation, apparently used by Piola, is described and an observation about the first appearance of Piola stress in Lagrange works due to Piola himself is made.
