A creep feed grinder is newly developed according to the machine requirements on power, stiffness, creep feed mechanism, coolant device, etc.. Difference in force generation mechanism between up- and down-cut creep feed grinding is made clear experimentally taking account of thinner and longer chip geometry. It is shown that the occurrence of workpiece burning, which often becomes troublesome in creep feed grinding, can be expressed in terms of grinding energy flux (grinding energy per unit contact area per unit time). Nomographs are presented, by means of which the optimal grinding conditions can be set whereby burning will be eliminated. Finally, a polyurethane resin bonded wheel is developed in order to contain burning and is shown to be effective to this extent.
