The entire Formula Student competition would be inconceivable without the many helpers and volunteers who run the organization and the race meetings. We spoke to Steffen Hemer, member of the executive committee of Formula Student Germany (FSG), who is responsible for the driverless class, about the latest challenges and the potential changes to the rules of the student racing series.
Steffen Hemer who was born in 1986, studied applied computer science at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern between 2006 and 2015. In 2008, he took on responsibility for the activities run in schools by the Robotics Research Laboratory at the university and this inspired him to write his bachelor's thesis in 2011 on the subject of "Developing a LeJOS simulation for Lego Mindstorms NXT robots." He completed his master's degree with a dissertation on trajectory planning for typical tasks performed by excavators. In 2010, Hemer joined the FSG team at the university, the "Kaiserslautern Racing Team (KaRaT)." Since 2015 he has been a scholarship student at the Robotics Research Laboratory and is continuing to work on the automation of excavators. His involvement in the Formula Student Germany organization began in the same year and he is now responsible for the driverless class on the FSG executive committee.
