This book is an edited collection of 13 conference papers presented at the conference “The EU as a ‘Global Player’ in the Field of Human Rights”, at the Lincoln Law School in November 2009. The editor, Jan Erik Wetzel’s proposition is that whilst the evidence of the EU’s positive influence in relation to trade, humanitarian aid and environmental protection is well-established (1), conclusion about its ability to influence human rights issues is less clear-cut. He therefore sets out to tackle the central question of “whether the EU can add legal authority to its financial and moral influence” (2). To achieve this, he seeks to draw out common threads on the diverse conference papers. …
