Über dieses Buch

Based on simple examples, this book offers a short introduction to the general-purpose finite element program MSC Marc, a specialized program for non-linear problems (implicit solver) distributed by the MSC Software Corporation, which is commonly used in academia and industry. Today the documentation of all finite element programs includes a variety of step-by-step examples of differing complexity, and in addition, all software companies offer professional workshops on different topics. As such, rather than competing with these, the book focuses on providing simple examples, often single-element problems, which can easily be related to the theory that is discussed in finite element lectures. This makes it an ideal companion book to classical introductory courses on the finite element method.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction to Marc/Mentat
Abstract
The development of finite element software goes back to the early 60s when Richard MacNeal and Bob Schwendler in 1963 founded the MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation(MSC).
Andreas Öchsner, Marco Öchsner
Chapter 2. Rods and Trusses
Abstract
The definition of rod elements is summarized in Table 2.1. The derivation in lectures normally starts with the introduction of an elemental coordinate system (x) which is aligned with the principal axis of the element. Based on the definition of this element, deformations \((u_{1x},u_{2x})\) can only occur along the principal axis. Assuming linear interpolation functions for the displacements, a constant elemental stress and strain is obtained.
Andreas Öchsner, Marco Öchsner
Chapter 3. Euler–Bernoulli Beams and Frames
Abstract
The definition of Euler–Bernoulli beam elements is summarized in Table 3.1. The derivation in lectures normally starts with the introduction of an elemental coordinate system (xz) where the x-axis is aligned with the principal axis of the element and the z-axis is perpendicular to the element. Based on the definition of this element, displacements \((u_{1z},u_{2z})\) can only occur perpendicular to the principal axis while the rotations \((\varphi _{1y},\varphi _{2y})\) act around the y-axis.
Andreas Öchsner, Marco Öchsner
Chapter 4. Timoshenko Beams
Abstract
The definition of Timoshenko beam elements, which allows for the consideration of transverse shear effects, is summarized in Table 4.1. The derivation in lectures normally starts with the introduction of an elemental coordinate system (xz) where the x-axis is aligned with the principal axis of the element and the z-axis is perpendicular to the element. Based on the definition of this element, displacements \((u_{1z},u_{2z})\) can only occur perpendicular to the principal axis while the rotations \((\phi _{1y},\phi _{2y})\) act around the y-axis.
Andreas Öchsner, Marco Öchsner
Chapter 5. Plane Elements
Abstract
The definition of a plane stress element is summarized in Table 5.1.
Andreas Öchsner, Marco Öchsner
Chapter 6. Classical Plate Elements
Abstract
The definition of a thin or Kirchhoff plate element is summarized in Table 6.1.
Andreas Öchsner, Marco Öchsner
Chapter 7. Three-Dimensional Elements
Abstract
The definition of a solid element (hexahedral) is summarized in Table 7.1.
Andreas Öchsner, Marco Öchsner
Chapter 8. Elasto-Plastic Simulation
Abstract
The following paragraph summarizes some fundamental characteristics and modelling approaches of one-dimensional elasto-plastic material behavior.
Andreas Öchsner, Marco Öchsner
Chapter 9. Advanced Topics
Abstract
Procedure files are text files (ASCII) which allow you to execute a pre-defined sequence of commands. They can be useful, for example, to generate a mesh without having to input nodes and elements manually. Whenever writing a procedure file in a text editor, they have to be saved as a ‘.proc’ file.
