The human rights regime is going through difficult times, and many prominent scholars have responded in various ways. What makes Alison Brysk’s book The Future of Human Rights different from previous responses is its focus on strategies to overcome new challenges. The international human rights regime has never worked perfectly, but she argues that now is the “time for a reboot to close historic gaps and confront emerging challenges” (2). The book, which can at times be read as a playbook of human rights activism, connects Brysk’s argument to the relevant scholarship and offers an important resource for advanced students and human rights researchers. …
