In order to be able to work within the law so far as employment is concerned you must understand the basic framework of the English legal system. Therefore we begin this chapter with an examination of the legal framework of employee rights in the UK. This is also a vital ‘building block’ for the work that you will do in Chapters 11 and 14. The rest of this chapter focuses on the ways in which the law influences the rights of the new employee. We shall examine relevant areas of the law on race and sex discrimination, the rights of trade unionists, the disabled and those who have been convicted of crimes. This is followed by a discussion of the rights and obligations of employers and employees when there is a contract of employment between them.
