The borehole measurements and core retrievals represent a risk for the superdeep borehole. Therefore, the strategy will call for a pilot borehole drilled at the same site, cored continuously and including an extensive and comprehensive logging programme. The aims will be: to protect the superdeep borehole from any danger due to logging;to correlate results obtained from logging measurements with core analyses;to test logging and evaluating methods, developed for sedimentary conditions and to find out if they can be applied in crystalline rocks.Furthermore, a priority list has been established for borehole measurements, and a permanent logging unit as well as a few logging tools have been purchased. The logging of the pilot and the superdeep borehole will follow the same scheme: during the drilling only logs absolutely necessary will be carried out with regard to a priority list;after reaching final depth, all other measurements will be executed. To realize the overall strategy, concrete and detailed steps have been worked out and should be followed:realization of a market study of existing tools and cables;setting-up of working groups to evaluate the use of existing logging tools and interpretation methods for crystalline rocks;development of new tools and evaluation systems not offered by industry;execution of so-called geophysical key experiments;designing of a downhole observatory for long-term use in the pilot borehole.
