Abstract

The City of Orlando, FL, USA constructed the Orlando Easterly Wetlands in the mid 1980s to help polish treated wastewater. Over 30+ years of operation, the wetland has reduced influent TP concentrations 71% and has kept 238,000 lbs. of P out of the St. Johns River. However, increased loading triggered a series of wintertime effluent P spikes. Management activities including prescribed burns, chemical dosing and de-mucking were implemented in response. However, a more than doubling of influent TP has led to additional wintertime effluent TP spikes. Continued monitoring will be needed to determine the effectiveness of the aforementioned management activities on wetland P removal efficiency.
