Abstract

Road movies have a preference for spaces marked by horizontal extendedness, which explains the abundance of Patagonian road movies in Latin American cinema. The extensive travel literature on the region has produced internally conflictive images of Patagonia, as a land either external to modernity (an unconquerable region), internal to it (a region attracting pioneer migration or symbolizing the nation’s greatness), or lying at its borders. These three basic images punctuate the wide variety of road movies studied in this chapter and generate three narrative patterns: (1) stories of stranded journeys, (2) stories of good fortune and luck, and (3) stories of disappearance. These categories are presented through films by several directors, including C. Sorín and L. Alonso.
