The general problem of interest is the development of a mathematical theory capable of describing the behavior and properties of data processing systems. Data processors do something sometimes called “work”, they have the ability to make accomplishments sometimes called “thruput”, and they have a consequent “response time”. This particular analysis describes a way to relate time and information in a way that will subsequently facilitate analysis and measurement of computer “work”.
