In this chapter the author considers AdvanceDesign as a practice of design which enhances the dimension of systemic intervention on the interconnected spheres of technique, society and culture having important effects on the forms and contents of a pedagogy of design. The author will take a closer look at this specific point.

George Basalla, L’evoluzione della tecnologia, Rizzoli, Milan 1991. The examples used in support of this hypothesis are quite well known. Basalla, for example, looks at certain cases like the transistor the original ‘contact point’ form was the product of an imitation of the thermionic valve, or like the slavish structural imitation of the first electric systems that completely followed gas distribution systems, or like the first radios, which limited their functional potential simply because they were born to replace the telegraph on which they had modelled the performance-related possibilities of the new appliances.

The substantial restrictions that lead us to tackle issues sequentially, one at a time and one after another, have been extensively investigated by Herbert Simon, who unveiled at least three orders of restriction: limits in attention; limits linked to the capacity to tackle multiple values, limits liked to forms of rationalism limited in situations of uncertainty.
