Abstract
It is now the morning of December 21st, 1864. We were sitting round a blazing hickory fire chattering as merrily as Confederate women could in that disastrous year, trying to banish sad thoughts of the sufferings of our poor soldiers in those dark days – for a group of little boys were asking endless questions about Santa Claus [223].
So begins Ellen Brown Stuart’s eyewitness account of a Christmas season in Saltville when it fell under attack by a United States army. Ellen Stuart was the 26-year-old wife of William A. Stuart, one of the principal owners of the South’s largest salt-making operations. William, the eldest brother of Confederate General Jeb Stuart, had brought Jeb’s widow Flora and her two children to Saltville following the iconic cavalry hero’s death at the Battle of Yellow Tavern earlier that year. Flora would spend the rest of the war and several years afterwards in the town teaching school and raising her family under William’s care.
