In this chapter we describe a powerful technique used in the analysis of quantum many-body systems – the method of second quantization. In rough terms, it allows one, instead of working with a fixed number of particles, to let the number of particles fluctuate, while keeping the average number fixed. We apply this method to derive a useful mean-field limit for many-body dynamics. The method also provides a natural language for quantum field theory (see Chapters 19 and 20) and can be used to preview, in a much simpler setting, some of the issues arising there.
