Abstract

This commentary is an extensive response to Emily-Chamlee Wright’s essay, “Self-Censorship and Associational Life in the Liberal Academy.” Chamlee-Wright raises the important issue of how to steer between abrasion, a necessary condition for the production of knowledge, and civility and tolerance as defined in the classical liberalism of Adam Smith, also a necessary virtue in intellectual life. The essay posits the existence of a social structure of civility and incivility in contemporary academic life which is constituted by some of the existential conditions of the university, including hierarchical social relations, power differentials, and ideological homogeneity. The concept of “righteous incivility” as a moral duty under extreme conditions is entertained.

As it has evolved, this debate has become highly politicized in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, but it began as a serious enterprise with Robert Merton’s (1972) classic essay “Insiders and Outsiders: A Problem in the Sociology of Knowledge.” Merton’s essay is still perhaps one of the most important sociological frameworks for understanding “who gets to speak and what do they get to say.”

This discussion of Genossenschaft and Herrschaft owes much to the discussion of modern ideology in Louis Dumont’s Essays on Individualism (1986), Chapter Two, “Genesis 1, The Political Category of the State from the Thirteenth Century Onward”, and, especially section 5, pp. 76–81.

Many important sociologists have echoed Smith’s ideas. Charles Horton Cooley’s idea of “the looking glass self” and George Herbert Mead’s concept of “the generalized other” are almost completely Smithian in their view that actors guide their behavior according to specific reactions of others and to some sense of “what society thinks”. Fascinatingly, Erving Goffman draws on Smith twice in the first chapter of his The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1959), perhaps one of the most influential works in the history of sociology. But he would never argue that there is such a thing as virtue outside of performances.

I would add one qualification here that takes into consideration the differential effects of ideology in different disciplines. My observations here generally refer to the operations of ideology in the social sciences and, especially, in the humanities. The natural sciences enjoy a great degree of autonomy from ideology, even though it is clearly the case that the kinds of questions that can be asked and the answers that can be offered may be structured by ideological considerations.

In fairness to Olberding, I do not think she would agree with my activation of the concept of righteous incivility in the way that I have presented it here. The conclusion of this essay is the beginning of a new and more expansive sociological  exploration of the social structure of civility and incivility.
