The paper describes Group Analysis as used in Production Flow Analysis by Burbidge /l/. Group Analysis divides all the components of a cluster into smaller families and all the machines into groups in such a way that each family can be completely processed in one group. In order to satisfy this grouping a computer cluster analysis has been utilised. For each pair of components a similarity coefficient was calculated which described how similar the two components were in terms of the number of common machines they have visited. Using cluster analysis the groups of machines and family of components were determined. A number of different similarity coefficients were used to form groups using data obtained from industry and the subsequent groups compared and analysed.
