It has been mentioned frequently that the plazas seen in European cities have not developed in the cities of Japan and other Asian countries.l Although somewhat different from the plazas in Europe, there certainly exist many outdoor public spaces in Asian countries where people meet for social activities. In Japan too, numerous places for social interchanges have been created to the scale and form fitting our physical and cultural sense. One of the traditional types is the waterfront. As is the case in many other Asian cities, it is one of the most common kinds of urban space in Japan.
