Abstarct

The term inelasticity is used to describe any constitutive behavior other than elastic. Typically, the inelastic behavior includes viscoelastic, viscoplastic, and elasto-plastic behaviors. The uniaxial stress–strain relation shown in Fig. 9.1 is characteristic of many materials (e.g., aluminum, soil, etc.). For some materials (e.g., metals), the elastic part of the stress–strain relation is linear (and hence the elastic modulus is a constant). The nonlinearity results largely due to plasticity. However, the elastic modulus itself does change with loading for materials such as soil and rubber. A portion of the work done on a material by external forces is recoverable and the remaining portion is irrecoverable. The former is associated with inelastic strains and the latter with elastic strains. The behavior of inelastic materials is history- (or path-) dependent, whereas that of elastic materials is history independent.
