The type of energy called heat is on the atomic scale, kinetic energy of the individual atoms. The kinetic theory of matter gives simple, acceptable explanations of expansion and change of state, and also of the way in which heat travels through a substance by conduction, the atoms in turn vibrating more vigorously and passing on some of this extra energy to their neighbours.
