In the early 1970’s, there were a few isolated pockets of research activity focused on parallel algorithms. The advent of the Illiac IV stirred some additional interest but it remained for two events of the 1980’s to cause the explosion of interest that we see today. One of these events was the availability of relatively inexpensive parallel hardware such as the Intel iPSC. The other, spurred on by numerous federally supported research studies, was the advent of agency funds for parallel computing research.
