In order to induce an e.m.f. in a coil, it is necessary that the flux linking with the coil should change (Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction). It is for this reason that transformers can be used with a.c. supplies to convert voltages from one value to another; in this chapter it is assumed that the waveform of the supply is sinusoidal.
