It is common for 3D-CFD simulations of turbocharged internal combustion engines to limit the simulated domain on the intake side to parts of the intake channels and runners, sometimes including the airbox and throttle valve. The same principle is applied to the exhaust side where the boundary conditions are usually applied after the exhaust channels or the runners but always before the turbocharger (see Figure 4.1). In the figure shown, an external waste gate is integrated, requiring a second exhaust boundary condition.
