5. User Interface Design

verfasst von : Rüdiger Heimgärtner

Erschienen in: Intercultural User Interface Design

Verlag: Springer International Publishing

Abstract

This chapter provides the framework for understanding the influence of culture on the development of user interfaces. After the presentation of the influence of culture on the HMI, HMI-relevant cultural dimensions for the development of intercultural user interfaces are presented. Finally, the most important approaches, concepts and methods for intercultural user interface design (IUID) are presented.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Kerstin Röse very much for the content and, in part, the preparation and formulation of parts of Sects. 5.1.15.1.3. She deserves most of the credit for these sections.

Chunking means the organization of information into meaningful units. Humans can keep about 7 ± 2 chunks in their short-term memory at the same time (Miller 1956).

4
In order to explain intercultural communication and cooperation, several cultural dialogues must be used simultaneously (cf. e.g., also Rösch 2005).

6
More detailed information on the MCD can be found in (Röse 2002). Training on IUID topics (including the IUID methods addressed in this chapter) is offered by the author, e.g., via IUIC (see https://www.iuic.de).

7
The correct number and arrangement of information units is very important, for example, in applications in which the display surfaces are very small and at the same time the mental strain must be kept at an optimum level, such as driver navigation systems (cf. Heimgärtner and Holzinger 2005)—and in an intercultural context it is of course also dependent on the cultural requirements of the HMI system (cf. Heimgärtner et al. 2007).

This book is intended to contribute to this. As the author of this book, I am happy to answer your questions and provide feedback on the book and IUID. Further information can be found at URL = https://www.iuic.de.
