Abstract

Waterborne polyurethanes with photoinduced reversible chain extension were synthesized using the “acetone process” by means of the introduction of coumarin monomers in the chain ends. This synthetic method allowed us to incorporate different amounts of 7-(hydroxyethoxy)-4-methylcoumarin (HMEC) up to a maximum of 20 wt %, and the obtained structures were successfully characterized by 1H NMR. However, HEMC concentrations higher than 10 wt % affected the dispersion stability. The photoinduced chain extension reaction and its reversibility were studied by 1H NMR, UV–Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. Thus, UV–Vis spectroscopy revealed that the band at 320 nm, which corresponds to coumarin pyrone units, decreased when the sample was irradiated at 365 nm, whereas the band increased again when irradiation at 254 nm was applied. This behavior allowed us to characterize the dimerization kinetics and the rate constant of this process, and according to the results it was possible to establish that the reaction kinetics was influenced by the amount of coumarin in the system as well as by the number of applied cycles.
