Abstract

In this paper the history of the ‘unknown’ Medieval Volos will be studied and an attempt will be made to promote the cultural heritage of the Byzantine era. The effort will be completed with the proposal to create a thematic museum in the area of the Castle of Palea and a cultural route through the points of interest we have identified. The aim of the survey is to create a tourist attraction and thus to improve cultural tourism. Furthermore, knowing the history of our region means to know the evolution followed by the society. This is important because many people ignore the history of this period. For the region of Volos we have a lot of historical evidence for earlier historical periods, such as Neolithic and Classical. However, it remains unknown what happened in the region during the medieval period from the 4th to the 15th century AD.

The city, as described by Kordatos [17], after the destruction of the barbarian genders, did not remind the once-glorious Demetriada. However, as Avramea points out, the city of Demetriada, unlike Phthiotides Thives, was neither occupied nor besieged by the Slavs, who seemed to live there peacefully and were engaged with agriculture [9].

The Saracens were Arab Muslim pirates who, starting raids from northern Africa and Aqaba, arrived in the Mediterranean. The raids of the Saracens in Greece began before the 9^th century AD, lasting until the 10^th century AD, causing the terror and desolation of the Aegean islands. In 824 AD, they conquered Crete, reaching Thessaloniki, the second capital of the Byzantine Empire, dominating it in 904 AD [28].

For the conquest of a city were used wooden constructions with floors of a height corresponding to the walls known as woodcutters. Within it were the soldiers who were about to attack. The movement was done with oxen, horses and pedestrians on wheels. Series of archers protected those who were moving it, throwing their arrows to the wall [28].

Members of the Melissenos family were distinguished throughout the Byzantine territory and emerged as senior entitles of Byzantium, such as generals, princes, ecclesiastical lords, toparchs [30].

An enemy ship warning system was the flashing of tower tops using intermittent smoke [31].
