Von Multiple Modernities zu Multiple Secularities: kulturelle Diversität, Säkularismus und Toleranz als Leitidee in Indien

Zusammenfassung

Ausgehend von der Frage nach der Rolle von Säkularität im Programm der „Multiple Modernities“ argumentieren wir, dass sich vor dem Hintergrund unterschiedlicher „Zivilisationen“ eigene Formen der Grenzziehung gegenüber dem Religiösen und damit multiple Säkularitäten ausbilden. Diese lassen sich als spezifische Antworten auf gesellschaftliche Bezugsprobleme und gleichzeitig als Referenz auf die westliche Moderne lesen. Am Beispiel Indiens argumentieren wir, dass es dabei weder um eine reine Fortschreibung religionsgeprägter (hinduistischer) Traditionen noch um eine bloße Übernahme von Formen westlicher Säkularität geht. Vielmehr zeigt sich hier eine indische Spielart der Grenzziehung gegenüber dem Religiösen, die auf einer eigenen Geschichte der Balance religiös-kultureller Diversität und des Religionskonflikts basiert.

Eisenstadts Arbeiten sind prinzipiell auf Fragen der zivilisatorischen Prägung der Moderne fokussiert und sagen relativ wenig über Formen der Begegnung nichtwestlicher Kulturen mit der europäischen Moderne. In seinem Buch „Imperial Encounters“ (2001) rückt Peter van der Veer eine solche Begegnung ins Zentrum und betont vor allem, dass auch imperiale Zentren zutiefst von der Begegnung geprägt sind.

Romila Thapar (1998) verweist hier auf das seit dem 4. Jahrtausend v. u. Z. nachgewiesene Svastika-Symbol, das – als Glückssymbol – von unterschiedlichen Religionsgemeinschaften in unterschiedlichen Kontexten verwendet wurde. Auch die Epen der Mahabharata und der Ramayana existierten in unterschiedlichen Varianten als Träger ethischer Tradition und als Mittel politischer Legitimation. Erst allmählich wurden sie zu Symbolen bestimmter, klar definierter religiöser Gemeinschaften.
