Abstract

Traditional organized bazaars are important retail venues in Viet Nam, but there are concerns about their waste management programs. This study examined five organized bazaars in Da Nang City, Viet Nam, to provide baseline data for improving bazaar waste management. We focused on vendors that produce organic waste and summarized the quantity and composition of waste obtained from ten typical merchandise categories. There were notable differences in the waste quantities and composition between the waste obtained from merchandise categories and bazaar locations. Fish and vegetable vendors and food stalls are major sources of organic waste that can be used for local swine breeding. Overall, introduction of source separation was negatively viewed among vendor clerks. However, it is possible that a small reduction in the garbage collection fee, which is linked to the introduction of source separation, would change their attitudes.

These statistics are based on information from the Hanoi Urban Environment Company that imposes extra waste collection fees on major sources of solid wastes [3].

Most vender clerks in the traditional organized bazaars surveyed in this article were female, although we were not able to find official statistics of workers’ genders in traditional bazaars. According to the national laver statistics by General Statistics Office of Viet Nam [12], 14.0 % of working women belong to the trade industry in comparison to 9.7 % of men. Studies in traditional markets in Indonesia reported that female clerks were common (Shimada [13], Budijanto [14]).
