The large number of sources of possible detriment to the aqueous environment prompts a need to generalise in order to describe the transfer of pollutants and contaminants to a defined target and an assessment of any effects. This approach requires knowledge and experience which has often been gained in other disciplines; care needs to be exercised in order to ensure that it is applied in an appropriate and economic manner. Some possible areas of concern are considered.
