Abstract

The problem of glass strength remains a high priority for special articles used in transportation and aviation as well as for glass articles used in architecture and construction. In practice glass strength is two orders of magnitude lower that its theoretical value. The problem of researchers is to find means for strengthening glass that eliminate the large difference between the theoretical and actual strength values. Methods that increase glass strength by means of compressive stresses of the glass surface have been studied the most. The production of glass with defect-free macrostructure is becoming the main direction for increasing strength.
