Abstract

In this study, rock samples from various tectonic domains of North Pakistan are assessed in terms of their physical, mechanical, and petrographic characteristics. A comprehensive petrographic investigation unveiled a range of vital textural characteristics within the samples, encompassing modal mineralogical composition, mineral alterations, micro-fracture occurrences, and mineral grain sizes. A comprehensive suite of both destructive and non-destructive tests, coupled with thorough aggregate testing across all rock types, has been diligently conducted. These tests included Compressive Strength (UCS), Tensile Strength (UTS), Point Load Test (PLT), Schmidt Hammer test (SHT), Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV), Specific Gravity, Water Absorption, and Porosity assessments. The integration of field observations, petrographic insights, and physico-mechanical data has facilitated the assignment of weathering grades to the samples. This rigorous analysis has culminated in the classification of granite into three distinct strength classes: high-strength properties (Grade-I) comprising four out of eight samples, intermediate-quality (Grade-II) granites represented by two out of eight samples, and low-quality (Grade-III) granites constituting the remaining two samples. Remarkably, all samples surpass the minimum strength thresholds recommended for versatile building stone applications. Furthermore, the physico-mechanical assessment demonstrates that the granitic rock aggregates align comfortably with the stipulated limits of respective standards, thereby validating their suitability as viable aggregate sources. Through regression analysis, it becomes evident that the empirical correlation linking UCS with SHT and UPV offers heightened reliability compared to the UTS and PLT correlations. Consequently, the compelling geotechnical and petrographic outcomes strongly advocate for the feasibility of employing granitic rocks as a pragmatic choice for construction material aggregates. Ultimately, the research not only contributes to the scientific understanding of granitic rocks but also provides actionable knowledge for optimizing construction practices in the specific geological context of North Pakistan.
