The importance of the Bretton Woods Institutions (so-called because they were designed in the New Hampshire town of that name in 1944) in the whole story of development and aid, and in the relationship between the First and Third Worlds over the period since the war, cannot be doubted. Together the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have had an extraordinary impact on the shape of the post-war world, and particularly on the developing countries.
