The history of modern slaveholding frequently centers on the nations of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, and regularly focuses on the prominence of the caste system, wherein Brahmin slaveholders occasionally hold those in lower castes, like the untouchable Dalits, through nefarious manipulations of debt bondage that link slaves and their families to land and labor. Most of these studies of modern slaving focus on the study of the slaves’ experiences within these systems, whereby the masters are often provided to readers as either part of an evil structure or as personally malevolent actors manipulating economic relationships for their own gains. …
