Abstract

Wireless sensor networks is a research field across multiple application areas: energy, environment, industry and health. Miniaturized, zero-power, real-time, self-organized, self-localized distributed measurements is the idea introduced by the well-known concept of Smart Dust (http://​robotics.​eecs.​berkeley.​edu/​~pister/​SmartDust/​SmartDustBAA97-43-Abstract.​pdf) more than 10 years ago. Low-power wireless communications [e.g. IEEE802.15.4 (IEEE802.15.4-2006 Spec.)] make possible a lot of applications; some solutions are on the market, not always miniaturized, zero-power, real-time and self-localized, but affected by some limitations. Industrial applications, especially for process control, are moving towards some standard solutions, as WirelessHART or ISA100. This presentation will analyse real implementations, in terms of pros and cons.
