The International Conference on the Foundations of Digital Games is a unique event formed at the intersection of many disciplines both within computer science and beyond, ranging from core technologies to educational methodologies to the study of games as cultural systems. The community working on games research draws ideas and methods from these many subdisciplines to increase our understanding of games as technical and social artifacts. These practices leverage the compelling aspects of computer gaming and its underlying technologies, arts and practices.
Papers submitted to the conference described a range of novel techniques including both analytic and synthetic approaches. Submissions were categorized by their authors into one of several theme areas, including an at-large theme as well as themes covering artificial intelligence, computer science and games education, databases, games studies | game design, graphics and interfaces and networks & security. Many papers described the design and constructions of games themselves. During the review process, papers were carefully examined to determine the extent to which they discussed demonstrably effective, reproducible techniques.
